The surface of a cell is dotted with receptors, which are proteins shaped to recognize specific molecules. A peptide fits its receptor like a key fits a lock. This precision is what makes peptides so targeted: a cell without the matching receptor simply doesn't respond, no matter how many peptides pass by.

When a peptide docks with its receptor, the receptor changes shape and passes the message to the inside of the cell. That triggers a cascade of chemical signals, each step activating the next, like a row of dominoes. By the end of the chain, the cell has been instructed to change its behavior, such as producing a compound, releasing a signal of its own, or switching a process on or off.
